cité de l'écrit montmorillon

A literary stroll through Montmorillon

Wander round the numerous stores devoted to books and to the arts in this exceptional medieval district: booksellers and bookshops, potters, binders, painters to name but a few...

The extra little something: a fun-filled learning trail for the kids to find out more about the History of Books!

Montmorillon and books, an epic story of love. Back in the 18th century, a host of paper mills were dotted along the Gartempe. In the 1950s and 60s, the town continued to make news through publishing house Editions Rossignol’s educational posters, well-known in schools around the country

The Typewriter and Calculator Museum invites you in and conjures up yesteryear’s memories with its 200 machines showcased in its admission-free permanent exhibition.

Finish off your day with a flower-filled break at the Writers’ Rose Garden, a relaxing, romantic space, where you can revel in the amazing fragrances of 22 varieties of roses with their different colours and shapes, all named after well-known authors.

For those who love gourmet delights, a stop-off at the Macaroon Museum is a must! Indulge in sweet bliss with the little almond-flavoured pastries that everyone adores.

All year round, this wonderful district is alive and vibrant with lots of events and exhibitions. Whether you’re an avid reader or a collector, there’s definitely something for everyone!
